Our names are Izzy Bowen and Nicola Wood and we are G.C.S.E. Citizenship students. As part of our course we are required to carry out an activity to raise money/awareness for a charitable cause. As committed chess players, we were both keen on the idea of running a day-long chess tournament for local primary schoolchildren, both to raise money for the local schools and the chess club at Beaver Road, and give local schoolchildren an enjoyable and educational day. We are both alumni of Beaver Road and participated in the chess club while we were there, so recognise the need for funds both in the school and chess club, and the need to raise awareness of the benefits of playing chess.
Our chess tournament, entitled “Didsbury Chess Funanza”, is to be held on Saturday 18th October, in the Beaver Road Primary School dining hall. Attached is the form you will need to fill in and return to the Beaver Road Primary School main office should you like your child to take part, or alternatively you can post it to the address stated on the entry form. Players of all standards are welcome, and the competition will be split into age groups to give every player a chance of winning a prize. There will also be a separate “Friends and Relatives” section for all players over the age of thirteen. This would be an ideal opportunity for parents who are bringing their child/ren to the competition anyway. During the course of the day there will be a tuck shop available, selling various snacks, drinks, tea and coffee. Between rounds there will be the option for players to take part in an additional “Puzzle” competition, where the participants will have to try and solve as many chess puzzles as they can during the course of the day in order to win a separate prize. This should hopefully prevent children becoming bored between rounds should they finish their games early!
We thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and hope to see your child/ren (or even yourself!) at the Didsbury Chess Funanza.
