Variant Chess, by Stewart Reuben [12/12/06]

The Coulsdon International (11-15 december) is now looking for 1 non-English player of any rating having secured Thomas Rendle (IM) instead of another FM. The player coming in would only (!) need 6 points for a norm.
Anything you can do to help through your contacts and anything you can display on your website asking people to contact us would really be appreciated. We can offer a free entry if necessary but can't really afford to pay anyone else.
We are also looking for 2 players for the Challengers' event. The winner of that rceives free entry into a future IM norm making event.
Kind regards, Scott [11/12/06]

London Chess Olympiad looks like a killer move:
By John Inverdale [26/10/06]

Wednesday 25 October was a good day for chess on TV. First there was an edition on BBC 1 of Neighbours with a fair amount of chess. They even had the boards around the right way. But the main young player blasphemed. He said, 'Perhaps I take chess too seriously.'
Then it was immediately switching channels to BBC 2 for the Quiz Show Eggheads. The all female Pride and Prejudice Team didn't do too well, but they demonstrated that chess wasn't played solely by male geeks.
Thus two more programmes to add to my catalogue of TV material - see www.englishchess.org.uk/articles/chess-videos_mar03.htm

Nigel Short's column in the Guardian has been discontinued, although that of Leonard Barden is not under threat. Each chess column lost is a blow to chess. You may wish to write to the Guardian expressing your dismay. Our experience is that such protests are often successful, but it requires a substantial number of people to write in.

David Norwood announced his retirement from the Saturday Daily Telegraph chess column after 13 years. It reminded us that the column has been like a breath of fresh air over all those years and he will be sorely missed. But no fear, Michael Adams is taking the spot over and his insights should make very interesting reading.

The Coulsdon "Premiership" International is due to take place from Monday 28th August to Friday 1 September. Alongside it is the new Challengers' event, which is also a 10 player all-play-all tournament, with the winner receiving a free entry into a future IM norm making international. Due to a visa difficulty, one of the players has been forced to withdraw from the Challengers' event and we are looking for a suitable replacement. The player can be of any nationality and we are not limited to a specific rating, although within reason, we will seek to find the highest rated player that we can. Details of the competition can be seen at: www.ccfworld.com/Chess/Results/2006-09-01_International.htm

Obituary: Eric McCanlis
Eric died last week aged nearly 90. He was one of an army of workers for British chess who have given so much enjoyment to so many. His speciality was wallcharts and people who played in the Lloyds Bank Masters should remember the incredibly detailed information that was provided by him. They were a work of art.
Our condolences to his children and family.

Nigel Short had something of a triumph in the 15th Asian Games in the Mixed Team Championship 6-14 December. You may well ask. He coached the Iranian team to third place behind India and China.
Originally he had accepted and was announced as a member of the Appeal Committee for the Candidates Tournament due to take place in Elista in May-June. However, he withdrew as soon as he learnt that Georgios Makropoulos had been appointed chairman. At this time only the chairman and one other member are listed. There are supposed to be three. Surely it is improper for a member of the World Championship Committee to be a member of the Appeals Committee as he could be involved in protests against his own previous decisions.

A quite week for English players internationally. Nigel Short leads the Commonwealth Championship 19-29 November in Mumbai with 7/8. There are two more rounds and he is paired with the strong Woman IM Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi in round 9. The event has the look of Nigel against the Indian subcontinent as there are few players from other areas.
Nigel is the President of the CCA and, of course, EU Champion. Will he try to make it a trio of titles with the European Championship next April?
Stewart Reuben [29/11/06]

Luke McShane played in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen 18-19 November. He lost to Konstantin Landa (2570) and drew with Andre Volokitin (2645).

Gawain Jones 2430 4-10 6.5/9 2570; Thomas Rendle 2382 35-52 5/9 2321. In the Amateur (under 2300?) Paul Hutchinson 2178 5.5/9; Andrew Kitchlew 2107 4/9.

10th Essent Open, Holland 21-28 October 84 players
Stephen Giddins 2197 61-71= 3.5/9 2164 Rp.
The rating performance is determined from the crosstable of the event. It only takes into account results against rated opponents. It is determined from the average rating of the opponents and the percentage score.

Luke McShane played board 1 for Werder Bremen in the first two rounds of the German Bundesliga. He scored 0.5/2 against 2600+ opponents. This is the equivalent of the 4NCL, though with a much longer history. Gone are the days when the Secretary of the German Chess Federation described the event as a benefit or English players due to the large numbers who played.

Guinness Chess Records in Mexico City: Imagine: a simultaneous exhibition with 14,000 participants – possibly the only chess event that is visible from space. The signing of almost 2000 books in one go by the 12th world champion Anatoly Karpov. A rapid chess tournament, and then the scaling of the Teotihuacán pyramid. Mexico sets new records in chess ... Blind Word Championship: Britain had two representatives in the championship in Goa Oct 8th to 18th ... Bill Armstrong reports [24/10/06]

Chris Ross scored 5.5/9 finishing 13-19th in the IBCA (Braille) World Chess Championship which took place 9-18 October. The 32nd Guernsey International took place 15-21 October. MP Burrows scored 5/5 to finish 4-6th. DO Collier and GR Clark scored 4.5 to finish 7-16th.

The European Club Championship took place 8 to 14 October in Austria. There were two English-based teams.
Gawain Jones 2430 played board 1 for Slough Sharks and scored 5.5/7, exceeding the GM norm by 0.5 points, with a rating performance of 2672. This is his second GM, the first of which was in Liverpool. He will need a further 10 games. This is a typical leap forward of somebody in his gap year. The rest of the team did less well winning 3 matches and amassing 18 game points from a possible 42. they finished 37th. Ben Purton (captain) 2091 3.5/7 2062 RP. Malcolm Armstrong 2101 1.5/7 1700. Ben Edgell 2012 3.5/7 1918. The remainder of the team were Scottish. Gawain's result justifies the support offered the team by The Friends of Chess.
Hilsmark Kingfisher also won 3 matches but gained 19 points, finishing 36th. Theirs was a more international team, led by Ulf Andersson (Sweden). Simon Williams 2473 4/7 Rp 2501, edging closer to 2500 and the GM title.
Andrew Greet 2439 3.5/7 2408. Jovanka Houska 2364 3.5/7 2264(?) Lawrence Cooper 2309 2/5 2172. Mark Hogarth was the non-playing captain.

David Howell 2471 played in the World Junior (Under 20) Championship in Yerevan 3-16 October. There were 83 players. We did not have a female representative. He had a fine result scoring 8/13 for a 2522 Rp. This is a welcome return to form, he had gone somewhat backward having taken virtually a year off chess for his GCSEs.

XI IBCA World Individual Champions: This is Chris Ross here. At the moment, I am in Goa, India for the XI IBCA World Individual Championship for the visually impaired. I am the official representative for the UK playing under the Braille Chess Association.
The tournament runs from Monday 09 October to Wednesday 18th October.
The official tournament website, where you can get all the results from is: www.aicfb.org. The Braille Chess Association website is: www.braillechess.org.uk. On that, I am writing a daily blog of my, Stephen Hilton, who is from Scotland and Michael Delaney from Ireland's progress.

FIDE Trainer Title Applications: Readers are reminded that they can still apply for the title of FIDE Trainer until 30 November 2006 without first having to attend and pass training seminars ... [3/10/06]

The 1 October FIDE Rating List is out. Leading English players active over the last three months:
Michael Adams was ranked 8th at 2732. He moves down to 9th, but up to 2735. Nigel Short goes from 29th to 28th and up from 2676 to 2677. Luke McShane 2617, Mark Hebden 2545, Jon Speelman 2533, Stuart Conquest 2533, Danny Gormally 2519, Jonathan Parker 2518, Nigel Davies 2504, Nicholas Pert 2502.
The very strong Monarch Assurance Isle of Man Congress took place 23 September to 1 October. Alexander Areshchenko and Sergey Volkov came first equal with 7/9. Gormally, Hanley, Hebden and Richard Palliser also scored 5.5. Gary Quillan achieved what I think is his second IM norm with 5/9. His first was also at this event many years ago. He seldom plays more than one international event a year.
The Gausdal Bygger'n Masters took place 24 September to 2 October 5. John Quinn (2150) scored 4.5/9 for a 2066 performance. The problem with these excellent Norwegian events is that the lunchtime smorgasbord is excellent - and play takes place in the afternoon.

I.C.S.C. World Deaf Team Chess Championship, Hungary, 8-17 September 2006 [22/9/06]

The Commonwealth Championship will take place at the Hotel Mirador, Mumbai 19-29 November 2006. Each federation is entitled to nominate one male and one female representative who will each receive free board and lodging.
GMs and WGMs are automatically entitled to the same hospitality. IMs and WIMs are entitled to just free board but would have to pay their own accommodation, unless of course, the representative.
People wishing to be chosen as the representative should contact the ECF Office. No doubt Nigel Short, President of the Commonwealth Chess Association will havw further details.

The European Union Championship took place in Liverpool 6-15 September. This is the first in a series of extremely ambitious events leading up to 2008 when Liverpool will be the European City of Culture.
Nigel Short won this 84 player event with 7.5/10. This was Nigel's first international tournament in Britain since he won the Smith & Williamson British Championship in Torquay in 1998. Among those finishing second on 7 were Stephen Gordon, Gawain Jones, Danny Gormally and Luke McShane. The first two youngsters both achieved their first GM norms.
There were many other fine English results and the administration of the whole event seemed impeccable. This was a great triumph for English chess.
Peter Wells scored 5.5/9 in the LGA POremium Cup in Nuernberg 7-10 September.

Milos Pavlovic won the 63 player South Wales International which took place 8-13 July with 7/9.
Matthew Broomfield, Danny Gormally 6.5 2-6=
Anthony Allicock, Charles Cobb and Jack Rudd scored 6 to finish 7-10=.
AM James 5.5 11-21=.
This secured Charles Cobb his final IM norm and he should receive the title after the next FIDE Presidential Board Meeting. Although Matthew did very well, his slow start meant that the average rating of his opponents was much too low for him to gain a title norm.

Congratulations to international chessplayers Lucy Jessica Broomfield and Joseph Patrick Conlon on their marriage on Saturday 15 July.

155 players took part in the South African Open championship in the attractive resort of Port Elizabeth. England was well-represented in this long-established event.
Gawain Jones won with 10.5/11, drawing solely with Thomas Rendle who himself came third with 8.5. Watu Kobese, who spent much of this year in England finished second with 9. Our other player Jessie Gilbert scored 7 to finish 14-29= and highest female competitor.
Gawain also won the SA Blitz Championship.
Jessie tells us that they were made to feel very welcome and hope to return in the near future.
They strongly recommend the event in the future. I attended in 2003 as Chief Arbiter and suggest, if you are looking for the experience of a foreign chess event, then you should consider attending in 2007. It will be at roughly the same time in Johannesburg at a 5 star hotel. The event will also be the Commonwealth Championship and I would expect a large number of Indians to pitch up, possibly making norms possible.

The European Summer Season has started so that more of our players are active.
30 June to 7 July saw 86 players in the Marseilles Chess Festival. Savchenko won with 7/9 and four English players finished on 6/9 finishing 5-17=. Glenn Flear, Mark Hebden, David Howell and Simon Williams.
1-11 July The Belgium Championship in Namur. Tom Wiley scored 3.5/9.
7-8 July saw the enterprising and very strong Women's World Cup in Dresden. Representation mirrored that in the small football event which I believe was taking place in Germany at the same time. Unfortunately Harriet Hunt did not do as well as England and failed to reach the quarterfinals which was won by Susan Polgar.
I cull these snippets from The Week in Chess www.chesscenter.com/twic/twic which continues to be the most informative source of information available about international chess.
Players taking a gap year and wanting to play international chess should contact me . Sometimes I have contacts that enable me to provide opportunities which may otherwise be missed.

Vladimir Dvorkovich Cup: An unexpected opportunity has arisen for a team of one boy and one girl to play in a rapidplay tournament in Moscow. The players must have been born 1 January 1989 or later. The dates are arrival 24 June and departure 1 July. It is a round robin tournament for mainly representatives of major countries.
The only cost to the players and one accompanying adult would be travel and visa. Two or, if necessary, 3 rooms would be available free at the hotel.
The prize money is very high totalling about £11,000 and there are unlikely to be more than 8 teams.
I realise this is desperately short notice and there would even be some problems in getting visas in time. Also some people may still be having exams. Further information if interested contact: Stewart Reuben 020 8892 6660

A Memorial Marker will be erected to Harry Nelson Pillsbury on Saturday 17 June in Reading, USA. This is the Centenary of his death.
