The new-year York congress remains an established and popular fixture in the northern chess callendar. This year's event, generously sponsored by Fulprint, attacted 234 players to the pleasant surroundings of the University of York. The Open section was led by the top seed, local IM Richard Palliser, who scored 4½ points from five rounds, ahead of Peter Shaw, Jonathan Hawkins, Martin Mitchell and David Adams. The qualifying place at the next British Championships was won by Peter Shaw of Wakefield.
The York congress uniquely offers prizes based on game points scored. This year no-one claimed the £250 offered for scoring five wins. The next prizes of £150 for scoring 4½ were claimed by Richard Palliser, Antonio Moneva-Jordan (major section), Stephen Crow and Richard Desmedt (intermediate) and by Gerry Whitehead in the minor section. Twenty-one players earned £50 for scores of 4/5 and sixteen further grading and junior awards brought the prize fund to £2,290.
