Obituary: Paul Watson
I regret to announce the sad and unexpected news that Sussex County Secretary Paul Watson died yesterday.
He collapsed whilst in a Brighton store and had already died on arrival at Hospital. He was due to meet for a meal in the evening with Paul and other chess friends and it obviously caused concern that someone so reliable failed to arrive. Upon contacting the Police to report their concern the events of the day were discovered.
Paul of course will be greatly missed as he has put in a mountain of work for our County Association over many years, and will be hard to replace as he always seemed to me the motivational force in Sussex.
Richard Almond
Sussex Open Match Secretary [9/11/05]
Paul Watson's Funeral
Paul's funeral is to take place at 1pm on Friday 18th November at Woodvale Cremetorium, Lewes Road, Brighton. Lewes Road is the main road into Brighton from the Lewes/Eastbourne/Hastings direction. The Crematorium is off to the left close to the junction where Sainsburys is located if coming into the city. Closest railway stations are Moulscombe and London Road. Click here for the map link.

Introducing the world's most unlikely sport: chessboxing
Take one comic book concept and several willing participants and you've got yourself the most unlikely sporting union since Andre Agassi and Barbra Streisand, says Georgina Turner. And what's more, it's catching on [1/11/05]

There was a presentation concerning the GibTelecom Chess Festival in Gibraltar on 24 October at the RAC Club. Alexei Shirov, Nigel Short, Antoaneta Stefanova are already signed up. Full details can be found on www.gibraltarchesscongress.com
A unique match was held after the presentation. Alexei Shirov partnered seven year old Peter Andreev against Jon Speelman with 8 year old Edmund Harding. The game was alternate moves, no consultation played at the rate of all the moves in 5 minutes + 10 seconds added for each move from the first.
A full photo-report of the event can be found on www.bcmchess.co.uk.
Both children are members of Richmond Junior Chess Club. Neither had any problems with the event and the quality of the game was very high. Edmund delivered the checkmate and thus has set a new world record for the youngest player ever to beat half a grandmaster!

Obituary: John Bisson
John Bisson died last weekend aged 90. It was his influence which caused the Guernsey Chess Federation to join FIDE and he founded the Guernsey Chess Festival, the latest edition of which concluded on Sunday 23 October.
He played in 8 Olympiads for the island and was non-playing match captain in a further two. He played in over 50 of the Guernsey-Jersey Challenge Matches.
He loved chess and his administrative work for the game gave untold pleasure to many players. Guernsey is only a small part of FIDE, but many of their officials had the greatest regard and affection for this tiny jewel of an island.
Our condolences to his wife Peggy and son Roy.

The National Girl's Team Chess Championships, held at Claremont Fan Court School Esher, set new records as hundreds of girls from all over the UK attended the first National Championships to be held at the event's new permanent home.
Blessed with perfect weather and beautiful surroundings the event was a huge success. The proceedings were begun with a presentation to the elite competitors by the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Martin Schofield. Many of these girls will be representing England, Scotland and Wales in the forthcoming World and European Championships.
Taking on these superstars of UK women's chess were teams from chess clubs and schools from all over the UK. Local schools were not to be outdone and Lady Eleanor Holles, with two full internationals in their teams, set the standard for schools with second places in the Under 18 and Under 14 sections.
Claire Summerscale, British Chess Federation Director of Womens' Chess said "the Championships have been an outstanding success. I am amazed at how many girls have come and how far they have had to travel. It had the feeling of a music festival not a chess tournament! This event just shows what can be achieved when girls, schools, parents, clubs, organizers and local businesses all work together. We can't wait until next year's event which promises to be bigger and better than ever".

Obituary: Kenneth Messere was born in 1928 and died at the end of March 2005 in Paris. He used to be an over-the-board player, but made his mark in correspondence chess. He was one of our most successful players in this field and held the correspondence IM title. He reached the final of the 1965-8 World Correspondence Championship and also wrote books on this aspect of chess. Our condolences to his family. Stewart Reuben [3/5/05]

Obituary: John A Fuller died in March 2005. He had been inactive as a chessplayer for many years, but played with some distinction in the Hastings Premier of 1949 scoring 3/9 and of 1955 scoring 3.5/9.
He was typical of this era of strong English players who would unquestionably have become an international master, had the opportunities of today been available then.

Obituary: Simon Webb passed away on 14 March. Simon had been inactive as an over the board player for many years, although he still played some correspondence chess - he was a correspondence Grandmaster. He was also a strong Bridge player. After he moved to Sweden we lost contact. His rating of 2420 did not really represent his potential as he never played chess professionally. He was born in 1949 and really had ceased activity by 1979. As Ray Keene said, "Everybody liked Simon." He had a ready wit and most engaging manner. His book 'Chess for Tigers' is not just the best of its type, it is unique, full of humour and sound practical advice. Our condolences to his family, especially his younger brother Roger, who was also a strong player, though now inactive.

Bob Wade Book: I am currently researching and writing a book about Robert Graham Wade, with his help and blessing. Bob was born Dunedin, New Zealand, 10 April 1921, won the New Zealand chess championship three times, came second in the Australian championship in 1945, won the SCCU championship three times, the British championship twice (1952 and 1970) and represented both his country of birth and his adopted country numerous times at zonal (Munich 1954) and interzonal (Saltjöbaden 1952) tournaments and in international team events, including 7 Olympiads (from Amsterdam 1954 to Skopje 1972) and now in various world and European senior events. Bob was recognised by the International Chess Federation as an International Master in 1950 and in 1979, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) at the Queen’s official birthday, for services to chess.
Despite access to his large library, diaries and personal papers, there remain some large gaps.
In particular I am searching for information regarding Bob’s participation with chess clubs in England, as a member, coach, mentor, etc. and also as a participant in the various leagues and other competitions that these club’s entered. Can anyone help me with this. Paul McKeown [7/3/05]

The Corsican Circuit took place 26 October to 5 November. The first two events were blitz Swisses in which 4 players qualified for a knockout.
Jovanka Houska scored 5/9 in the first of these in Ajaccio.
In the second in Venacu she scored 6/9 and was second among the strong contingent of women players, winning 300 Euros.
Bastia was initially a 7 round Swiss played at the rate of all the moves in 90 minutes, add on 30 seconds from the first. Again she fared well and had to meet several GMs. She finished third among the women and received 200 and a further bonus of 60 Euros.
The top 24 players qualified for a knockout Corsica Masters in this open Swiss. They played down to 12 players. There they were joind by four players who were seeded through to this stage. These 4 superstars included Michael Adams.
He beat Riazantsev 4-3 in the round of the last 16.
He beat Fressinet 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
He lost 0.5-2.5 against Anand in the semifnal.
Vadim Milov then won the final against Viswanathan Anand 3-1. He explained to me he had bought his return ticket two days earlier as he cold not believe he would reach the final. On his way he had to overcome Judit Polgar and Mikhail Gurevich.
I was invited to observe the effect of the Corsican Rules. These require that players do not agree draws. They can only occur by repetition, stalemate, or inadequate forces to win. If the players feel there is no life in the position, they may ask the arbiter to allow them to draw.
The effect was a very low percentage of draws, 9.5% in the Open. The whole event is extremely well-endowed and thus it is hard to determine whether the players would be so enthusiastic about playing if the prize money were lower.

This was the first of many such events which are planned, ably run by Jon Haskel and sponsored by Eric Moskow. Games were broadcast on ICC. The next one is already scheduled for September 17th -25th and at the moment 2 foreign federation players are still needed. For those seeking a bit of Florida sun, good playing conditions, chances for a norm and a very helpful organising team I would highly recommend this opportunity. 2 games per day are played each weekend leaving midweek free for exploring Florida. At this time of year a large number of English players take part in events all over the world, with varying success. Sometimes one can only gauge their achievement from their rating performance. This is not always available and my be mixed in with the local national rating system.
Ghent Open 16-20 July. Chris Ward finished 1-6, but first on tiebreak with 7.5/9.
13-35 were John Emms, Tom Farrand, Andrew Law, Peter Sowray all scoring 6.5 in this 392 player event.
Sanyin Hotel Cup in China 8-20 July saw one of Luke McShane's 2625 most disappointing results. He finished last with 3/11 for a 2424 performance.
Amsterdam 16-24 July. Simon Williams 2461 scored 6/9 to finish 9th= for a 2590 performance. A win in the last round would have given him his last GM norm.
Lorin d'Costa 2352 5.5 2533
Robert Bellin 2399 5 2354
Simon Buckley 2333 4.5 2362
Rafe Martyn 2340 4 2244
Stephen Giddins 2204 3 2178
Mark Lyell 2194 3 2243
David Spence 2218 3 2199
Poltiken Cup Copenhagen 16-24 July
Murray Chandler 2542 7.5/10 2448. He finished 2=13 behind Konstantin Sakaev
Heather Richards 2150 7 2346 a fine result
Craig Norton 2122 6 2163
Scott Kenyon 1671 4 1964
Scott performed nearly 300 points above his FIDE Rating. But that figure was depressed as he score 0/4 against rated players in the 4NCL.

The 1st European Chess Solving Championship took place recently and Great Britain won the silver medals. Click the link above to read a report by John Rice, editor of The Problemist. Following this result, the BCPS have now finalised the British team for the World Chess Solving Championship to be held in Greece in September later this year. Michael Adams (2719) scored 50%, as did Kramnik, in the hugely strong Dortmund tournament 8-17 July for a rating performance of 2719.
Carl Gorka (2086) went somewhat further afield and had the performance of his life in the Australian Masters in Melbourne 29 June to 8 July. He scored 5.5/9 for a 2371 performance.

News from the European Individual Women’s Championship 2005: Jovanka Houska, playing in the European Women's Championship that concluded 24 June in Moldova, scored 8/12. Her rating performance was 2460 and this gives her the International master title, the third English woman to achieve this after Susan Lalic and Harriet Hunt. Jovanka was already a Woman Grandmaster, but the IM title, which is available to both men and women is harder to achieve. She had already qualified for the Women's World Championship which is due to take place within the next 12 months.
Thus so far this year, English players Danny Gormally has achieved the GM title and Andrew Greet, Jovanka Houska and Lawrence Trent the IM title. This is a splendid resurgence of fine achievements by our young players.

Kasparov Manhandled by Police at Moscow Protest
You probably know from the news headlines that the Russian oil billionaire and regime opponent Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been found guilty of fraud, tax evasion and embezzlement by a Moscow court. On the streets protesters gathered in support of the former Yukos CEO, amongst them Garry Kasparov, who again found himself under physical attack.
A noisy rally by supporters of Mikhail Khodorkovsky outside the court ended in a brawl Monday, with police detaining 28 people, including Yabloko deputy head Sergei Mitrokhin, and beating former chess champion Garry Kasparov with batons. About 300 people – a mix of children, students, middle-aged adults and pensioners – rallied outside the Meshchansky District Court. The protesters chanted, "Down with the FSB authorities! Freedom for Khodorkovsky and bread and water for Putin," "Putin is not Russia, we are!" and "Freedom! Freedom!"
OMON riot police then arrived, and officers began to drag a few of the protesters toward police buses. OMON officers also attempted to detain Kasparov, who heads the liberal Committee-2008 opposition group, and beat him with batons when he refused to go with them to a police bus.
"People were simply standing on the sidewalk, not hindering traffic or pedestrians," Kasparov told Ekho Moskvy radio later Monday. "The OMON were deployed against peaceful, unarmed people. People were pulled out of the crowd and beaten up. ... Those who organized this carnage must be arrested."
Shortly before the clash, Kasparov said the rally showed that public discontent was growing. "There is not yet the critical mass needed for an uprising like the one in Kiev, " Kasparov said. "But the people here today and the fact that the police are trying to round them up shows that the powers-that-be are afraid." [19/5/05]

Michael Adams is doing extremely well in the MTel Masters in Sofia, Bulgaria. At the halfway stage of this double round event he is first equal with Vladimir Kramnik, having won their individual encounter. the other players are Anand, Ponomariov, Topalov and Judit Polgar. The event continues until 22 May and the website is www.mtelmasters.com
This seems to be something of a preview for the FIDE World Championship which is due to take place in the Province of San Luis in Argentina 27 September to 16 October. The players there, apart from Mickey, are Kasimdzhanov, Anand, Topalov, Judit Polgar, Leko, Morozevich and Svidler. Kramnik turned down an invitation to play.
The French League was recently won by the NAO Chess Club, which was headed by Kramnik, Adams, Svidler and so on.
11-15 May saw the Continental Chess Association-ICC International at Lake George in the US. David Howell did well there, scoring 5.5/9, gaining a GM norm, a tournament rating of 2607 and winning $500. He finished 5th equal and everybody on his score or above is much higher rated than he is.

Andrew is the second Englishman to gain his final norm this year, Danny Gormally having got his final GM norm in Gibraltar in February. There seems to have been a resurgence of interest or possibly strong players coming through of late. It is likely Simon Williams will get his GM title and Thomas Rendle his IM title before the end of this year. The BCF Business Plan is for there to be at least one GM and three International Master titles achieved in three years. The Friends of Chess has similar objectives and has helped all these players in different ways over the years. Achieving these titles tends to overshadow other results. We shouldn't overlook the excellent 6/9 score by 14 year old David Howell thereby coming second in the B group.
International chess for juniors, girls, adults, women and seniors provide an aspect of the BCF where the organisation is at its most effective.
