Attention British Seniors

Players eligible are those born before 1 January 1944 (male) 1 January 1954 (female for World and European events).

European Senior Team Championship play 22 to 28 February 2004. Round 1 at 14.00, subsequent rounds 09.00. Rate of play 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by all the moves in one hour.
Venue The Treff Hotel, Wilhelm-Franke-Str. 90, 01219 Dresden. The nightly bed and breakfast charge is 31.50 Euro per night twin, 49 Euro per night single. In previous years only players with partners have shared.
Entry fee per person 38 Euro. Previously the BCF has absorbed this expense. That decision rests with the International Director, Rupert Jones.
Flights I have a quoted rate of £106 + £41 tax from Heathrow with one change in Frankfurt or Munich. This is from http://www.airline-network.co.uk. Thames Travel 0208 891 0166 has proven helpful in the past with this particular trip.
Dresden is an interesting city. The weather is colder than England at that time of year but was dry in 2003. The hotel is modern and comfortable.
2003 the BCF sent three teams. All players enjoyed themselves. The third team however came last of 30 teams. I think the event is probably too strong for players graded under 125.
Although the group is administered by the BCF, players from other British Isles federations are welcome to join the party and have done so in this past.
Players are required to be members of the BCF. The group Insurance Policy offered for players travelling for chess purposes is very good value for money.
Team selection will be by the BCF Senior Selection Committee: Stewart Reuben, David Anderton, Ray Edwards, and John Littlewood.
If you are interested, please contact Stewart Reuben as soon as possible, in any case by 15 December.
Stewart will be in Hastings and then India from 27 December. Michael Macdonald-Ross will be in charge in his absence. 2 Church Street, Wheathampstead, Herts AL4 8AO. Telephone 0158 233 3296.

Smith & Williamson British Senior Championship play 7 to 13 August. All rounds from 9.30am. Rate of play in 2003 was 40 moves in 2 hours, 20 moves in one hour, all the moves in 30 minutes.
Venue The Spa Complex, Scarborough. The event usually attracts about 20 players.
Scarborough is a pleasant resort. 2004 is the Centenary Year of the BCF and there will be several celebratory events during the congress.

Inaugural World Senior Team Championship play 5 to 12 October. All rounds from 2pm. Rate of play probably all in 100 minutes, plus one minute extra thinking time from the first.
Venue Ocean Castle Hotel, Port Erin, Isle of Man. This a 2-3 star hotel situated on an attractive bay. The nightly bed and breakfast charge will be £33 per night whether for single or twin occupancy. The evening meal will be £13. There is cheaper accommodation available in the vicinity.
Flights the cost from Britain is likely to be about £100.
If you intend to play in one such event in 2004, please choose this one. If it is successful, then its future will be assured. The Isle of Man Tourist Board, Friends of Chess and the BCF are supporting this event. Any further donations would be most welcome.

World Senior Individual Championship this will probably take place in November but the details have yet to be announced.

Royal Beacon Seniors Congress details have yet to be announced for this event, which takes place in late November each year. The venue has been The Royal Beacon hotel, Exmouth. Mrs L Crickmore pafcok@tersco.net
