49th Richmond Rapidplay, 14 September 2003

The 49th Richmond Rapidplay took place at the White House Community Association, Hampton on Sunday 14 September, controlled by Adam Raoof. A total of 127 players took part in the four sections - one of our highest even attendances.

The Open was, as expected dominated by the titled players. The only GM, Aaron Summerscale was out of contention by the half-way stage, having drawn with Ian Snape in the first round and lost to Graeme Buckley in round 3. The fifth round pairing between Buckley and Simon Williams was critical, with Buckley coming out on top. But in the last round he lost to Alex Cherniaev, leaving a tie for first place. Williams was left out of the prizes after a loss against Tom Hinks-Edwards, the only non-titled infiltrator into the prize list.

First place in the Major was shared by Donald Chaudhry and David Manukyan, who each scored 5/6. Richmond junior Anton Chernikov was just behind in third place.

The Intermediate saw a battle for first place between two juniors, 10-year-old Dominic Foord and Jia Shen Lee, aged 12. Dominic won his first five games, with Jia Shen, who had taken a half point bye in the first round, just behind. But in their last round encounter Jia Shen was victorious, leaving Dominic to share second place with one of our regular competitors, Azizur Rahman.

The Minor section was fiercely contested, and resulted in a three-way tie between 11-year-old Thilagini Anandajeyarajah, Yehuda Baruch and Mehdi Katib, who all finished on 5/6. The other prizewinners included two of Richmond Junior Club's brightest young stars, Milo Thrumble (aged 6) and Michael Yan (aged 7) - and 74-year-old Fred Coombes.
