It is recognised as such by the UK government as well as the World Chess Federation (FIDE). Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Channel Islands have their own federations.®

Knowsley Quick Play, 7 December 2003

At 10.00 am on the 7 December, over 50 junior chess players gathered at the Huyton Civic Suite to compete in the 2nd Knowsley Junior Quick Play Chess Tournament. The young chess enthusiasts, all under 12 years of age, travelled from all over Merseyside and beyond to compete in this prestigious tournament.

There were 3 categories on the day and after 6 rounds the Mayor of Knowsley, Councillor Mike Murphy, and the Mayoress along with Clare Jansz from Canter, Levin & Berg Solicitors in Kirby, who sponsored the event, were on hand to present the prizes and trophies to the following category winners and runners up.

Under 12s Graded Joint Winner: -
Timothy Fozzard (Chester) = 5 pts

Under 12s Graded Joint Winner: -
Hannah Mercer (Aughton, St Michael's) = 5 pts

Under 12s Novice Winner: -
Ben Davies = 6pts

Under 12s Runner Up: -

Under 9s Graded Winner: -
James Bowler (Leeds) = 6 pts

Under 9s Highest Placed Novice: -
Craig Burns (Aughton, St Michael's) = 3½ pts
