Obituary: We sadly report the death of Norman R Oliver who died peacefully on Sunday aged 59. Norman had been Secretary and Treasurer of The London Chess League for more than 10 years, and it was a mark of his absolute competency and the respect that clubs held for him that there were almost no appeals against his decisions during his long tenure.
Norman was a stalwart supporter and long standing member of Lewisham Chess Club, and it is a tribute to his determination to live as normal a life as possible that having been diagnosed with inoperable cancer more than 12 months ago he continued to play chess for his club until the end of last season. He will be sadly missed [10/9/03]. The funeral will be on Tuesday 23 September at 2:30pm at Eltham Crematorium, Crown Woods Way, Eltham SE9 [17/9/03] For a more detailed obituary please click here [29/10/03]

Obituary: David Parr died in August totally unexpectedly of natural causes at the age of 58, although still active...competitively in the Horsham area and when he was at his best he was rated approximately 2350 internationally and had a fine understanding of the game.
Our condolences to his family, including his brother Peter Parr, long-time resident in Australia and his father Frank Parr who is still playing chess competitively. [16/9/03]

Chess in Pieces - 21st Centrury Art, is documentary which will be broadcast on Monday 7 July at 8.30 pm on BBC4 (tv). It looks at how chess has challenged some of the sharpest minds in the world and driven its champions to obsession and insanity, and how, at the height of the Cold War, the board became a battlefield for rival superpowers to thrash out their intellectual superiority. The film illustrates how chess was a universal language which brought together artists in exile during the second world war, and continues to inspire even in the cynical commercial art world of today [2/7/03]
