Hull Congress, 31 October - 2 November 2003

The 40th Hull Chess Congress took place at the Comfort Inn, Hull, over the weekend of 31st October to 2nd November 2003.

The entry was slightly down on previous years at 106 and in particular the Open and Major tournaments, were very badly supported.

The Organisers appreciate that there were some disadvantages at the venue and in the Intermediate section, the lighting was completely unsatisfactory. In previous years, we had been blessed with sunny conditions so this had not been noticed.

There were several complaints about noise from the adjacent Merchant navy Club as well as City Centre noise and the proximity of the Hull Royal Infirmary traffic. Alternative venues will have to be considered.

An interesting note is that Roelof Westra of Hull and Beverley chess clubs, has attended all 40 Congresses, a feat only equalled by the Writer, who has played in NONE but Controlled in ALL !

Outstanding performances were by Dona Strauss of St Andrews who scored 100% to take the Major First Prize, and 11 year old M. Mohammed of Sheffield who won the Minor.
