Chess Challenge, 4 October 2003

This event was a great success. Battle of the Knights of the game, Richard Shepherd MP v Ray Dolan County Captain Staffordshire. Three games over the board, the MP Richard Shepherd managed one Draw against Ray Dolan. Game one was a draw and game 2 and 3 were wins for Ray.

Result: Richard Shepherd ½ - 2½ Ray Dolan.

The match took place at St John's Parish Church, Walsall Wood. It was relayed on to a big screen to an army of spectators. The sale of refreshments and chess cards - pick a number, guess the right one and win £25. The church raised £153 for Church Funds.

Ray Doland said "Richard Shepherd is not a bad player. There were no short games, I know he plays in the House of Commons. The first game was a draw as both flags had fallen. I must thank the Church Wardens, District Church Council, the Church Social Team, for organising the event on our behalf. Thanks to Colin Perrygrove who controlled the match, giving up his time free of charge. Special thank you to the Director of the Chess Challenge Michael Atkinson, for the big screen show and the video of the event!!"

Richard Shepherd said: "He was grateful to Ray Dolan for telling him that it was hte taking part that counts." The Chess Challenge came about because the MP asked for a re-match after he lost the first match a year ago, when he was asked to start the National Counties Chess Championships match between Staffordshire and Worcestershire last year.
