CCF Rapidplay, 4 October 2003

Coulsdon Chess Fellowship's first rapidplay of the new season (6 rounds) nearly saw a record entry. In the end, a field of 71 played; but this would have been higher than the record 74 had a few players not had to drop out for a variety of reasons. For the first time, 5 sections were run. The Open tournament, the Under 170, Under 140, Under 110 and Under 80 sections gave better chances for winning than the old 4 section format of last year.

The Open saw a couple of early shock results with Colin Crouch and Michael Franklin losing in the opening round to engaged couple, Mark Lyell and Meri Grigoryan respectively (they marry in 2 weeks time). Crouch and Franklin did pull themselves back into contention but Robert Gwaze and Tom Hinks-Edwards fended them off and ran clear; the only points they dropped were when they drew with each other.

The Under 170 section saw only 5 players in the end after 3 withdrawals that were only known about after the first round had started, so the event became an all-play-all with an extra round instead of being merged with the Open. Neill Cooper beat fellow Coulsdon member Stuart Hamilton in the final round to win 1st prize. The Under 140 section was shared by Selina Khoo (Weybridge) and Francis Fields (Crystal Palace). The Under 120 section was taken by Coulsdon member Garfield Moore who held off club mate Jeff Fleischer whilst the Under 80 prize went to Caroline Robson of North London who held off Neeilan Ravindran, who is a new young member here.

The Prize monies were awarded as follows:
