Having received comments regarding the conversion between BCF grades and FIDE Elo rating; a review has been conducted and the conversion has been amended for players below BCF 215/FIDE Elo 2325. This conversion applies only to conversions from and to official FIDE ratings; it does not apply to conversions to and from foreign national ratings, which will continue to use the traditional formula The conversion formulae is shown below. The updated conversion that will be used by the central team is as follows:
BCF to FIDE Elo |
FIDE Elo to BCF |
||
BCF < 216 |
Elo = (BCF x 5) + 1250 |
Elo ≤ 2325 |
BCF = (Elo - 1250) / 5 |
BCF ≥ 216 |
Elo = (BCF x 8) + 600 |
Elo > 2325 |
BCF = (Elo - 600) / 8 |
For convenience, I have also included the conversion in tabular form:

Note that the current conversion assumes a minimum FIDE Elo of 2000. It will be subject to future amendment in the light of further evidence; it is envisaged that reduction of the minimum rating on the FIDE system will affect the conversion formula in the future.
The new formula will only apply to conversion of official FIDE ratings. Conversions to and from foreign national ratings will continue to use the traditional formula, which is defined as follows:
BCF to National Elo |
Elo = (BCF x 8) + 600 |
National Elo to BCF |
BCF = (Elo - 600) / 8 |
In tabular form this is:
