Eric Khoo reports: Gawain is on Board 5 playing against a 2443 from the US of A. He should be in the top 10 position if he wins today. Selina has to challenge a 2101 rated player from India on Board 4. Her group is much more difficult to confirm positions, but a win or possibly a draw should keep her in the top 10 of the U12 Girls section. [Ed, Gawain and Selina are placed respectively 11/90 and 11/84 on progressive scores after 10 rounds. In Selina's group there are 7 players in the 16-strong pack ½ point behind who have a higher progressive score and none of them are playing each other. In Gawain's group the chasing pack is smaller but his progressive score is not as good, ½ lower than Ameet's. Gawain's next opponent has scored 3 wins on the trot, after 3 draws. Meanwhile Murugan in the U14s playing white has a good chance to win against the lowest ranked player on 6½. There are currently only 11 players in that section on a higher score than him.]

[Ed, 9.31am good morning everyone. Live games have just come online. Carlsen-Howell
is top of the bill today. 9.36 Nepomniachtchi is on game no 10, and is now on
move 3. Carlsen opens 1. Nf3 Nc6. The English This game is now in game 233
on the Internet Chess Club You can observe 233, and kibitz there. 10.00
No word yet this morning from our man in Crete, 10.30am but 'helpmate' at ICC
game 233 thinks that David's position at move 14. Bxd5 is 'almost resignable'!
What do you think? It seems 3 ... g6 was a mistake as it allowed 4. d4. 10.40
In U10 boys Ding has lost (correction) won and so Safarli must draw to
win on tie-break. 11.00am Nepomniachtchi's opponent has an unusual pawn 'structure'
at move 15. 11:45 Carlsen is consolidating an advantage on the queenside. 11.00am
Nepomniachtchi is winning at move 28. 12.10pm 23 ..g5 David is not allowing
his white-squared bishop into the game as he doesn't play d5.]
For a final round of the event, the starting was relatively low key. I can
feel a lot of tension in the hall and serious faces all round...It started on
time (compared to the first day!)
Reporting from Heraklio, George O'Toole wrote: "I went a pawn down, but
managed to get a draw by blocking my opponent's manouvres." Eric added:
"George was the first to finish. His total score in the U10 Boys is now
5.5 points in 11 rounds - a very credable first attempt at this event. No doubt
he will be keen to give it a go again if selected next year. Well done, George."
Selina Wrote: "I was a piece for two pawns up, then I won a little more
material and she resigned." Amisha Wrote : "I had a drawn position
but then I played a good move and then beat my opponent."
10:50 George drew. 11:30 Amisha beat her Georgian opponent. 11:40 Selina beat
her Indian opponent of 2101 rating! 11:50 James won. 11:55 Jessie drew. 12:00
Craig returned with a win!
[Ed, Carlsen played the dodgy 25. Qe4. - 12.45pm At move 39 David is equal 4 pawns and blksq bishop each 12.52 Nepomniachtchi has won his game and wins the title if David draws or wins.]
11:50 Molly scored a win. She said her opponent lost a rook to her and things went very well for her after that. 12:15 Simon won his game against his Brazilian opponent. 12:20 Gawain unfortunately lost to his 2443 rated opponent from US of A. 12:30 Li came back with a win! English points for this round stand at 8 points with 6 more games to come in!
[Ed, 1.00pm Move 44 and a draw looks likely for David? 1.17pm David draws at move 53. He will finish with Bronze medal either alone on 8.5, or on tie-break if there is a decisive result in the Andrekine-Berczes game. See Boys U12 cross table with progressive scores totals. See also David's round 11 and other games from this event in the Montreux viewer or the MyChess.com viewer.]
[Ed, 2.05pm according to the official site Poppy and Katie both won. Selina is guaranteed a top-ten place, 9th at worst, more likely 6-7th. 2.35 Official results suggest Selina 'no better than' 7th and could be overtaken by up to 2 players not yet reported.]
12:40 Poppy Aarons won her game and is now on 5.5 points to finish the tournament. Well done! 12:45 Katie won as well and stayed with the same points as Poppy! 13:10 Both Ameet and Murugun won 13:15 David returned with a draw and is likely to get the Bronze Medal. 13:30 Unfortunately, Teresa lost her game today. English total for the round is 12.5 points, the best of the 11 rounds played (11 wins, 2 losses, 3 draws). The leading boy and girl are David Howell (8.5) and Selina Khoo (7.5) with Murugan closely on 7.5 points for the boys. Andy promises a report for the tournament later [Hmmm] ...also more photos to be sent tonight.
Eric Khoo: Round Eleven, the last, ended in triumph for the English Squad. After defending a worse position for most of the game and despite a huge disadvantage on the clock, David Howell hung on for the draw and obtained the Bronze Medal. Bravo! The overall score was a tremendous 12.5 out of 16. Other winners were Simon Buckley who played in characteristic swashbuckling style, Amisha Parmar, who literally blew her esteemed Georgian opponent off the board [Ed, really?], Murugan and Ameet Ghasi, Katie Martin, Molly Morruzzi, Poppy Aarons, technicians Craig and James Hanley, both of whom impressed, Li Wu, who should be renicknamed Li Whirlwind ....and last but not least, Selina Khoo, who along with Murugan finished on the fabulous score of 7.5. Draws for Jessie Gilbert, George O Toole and losses from Teresa Khoo and Gawain Jones completed the scoresheet - all uncompromising, hard-fought games.
It's my impression that these World Championships have been a great success and the atmosphere in the English camp has been dynamic yet harmonious and friendly. In view of the strength of these tournaments and the almost 'professional' opposition that we are up against, the results have been excellent. To the players, coaches, parents and managers a simple thank you. We became a very effective team!
Peter Turner comments from the 4NCL: Fantastic!! Very well done everyone. I think today is a new best day score 12.5/16
[Ed, 4.30pm The cross tables are now complete here. It seems Murugan is 11th. Selina is 8/9th equal to her previous round opponent with whom she drew. I can't split them. According to my calculations, every single England player scored better in their sections than any other player from the British Isles. Details are in the British Isles Player List]
And on to the closing cermony...
