Round 7, Thursday 21st Nov 9.30am

Peter Turner reports: Now I go on patrol around the disco. It is rest day tomorrow and some of the players let their hair down!! [Ed, In his haste Peter forgot to attach the pairings with this message; I got them from the official site. Cross tables are also available on this site...]

Wednesday am: Today is the 'Rest Day'. For our youngsters there are scheduled coaching sessions arranged, but we have also planned for plenty for relaxation by the pool and on the beach. A group have gone to Knossos and will return for lunch; others are visiting the local shops for souvenirs, etc.. Mrs Turner has seen some jewellery she likes so I have been most generous and allowed a spend of up to 10 euros - I just can't get the hang of this foreign money, but I do expect some change from the 10 euros! Last night was the traditional, 'Let your hair down' disco for competitors. Mark, Glenn, Chris and myself ably assisted by Simon & Gawain kept an eye on the action and looked after members of the England team and made sure that everyone had a good time and got safely back to there rooms.

Most players had a lie in after the disco then met late morning with their coaches, went for a meal, rested by the pool or on the beach and then had some more serious chess sessions. I have been engaged in discussions with various delegations about these championships. Opinion is now that, after a disastrous start, this venue and accommodation is perhaps the very best experienced by most people. There is an internal battle in Greece between Halkidiki in the North and Crete to stage these championships for the next two years. We have enjoyed both locations and would be delighted to return to either.

Thursday 7.00 Double round today - mental and physical preparation important. Early morning wake up call to some rooms (by request). It seems that we will have another pleasant sunny day, lets hope with lots of happy smiling players. David is in 2nd= and has a tough morning game against 4th seeded Russian Dmitry Andreikine, a vital game if David is to maintain his challenge. Four of our team are on 4/6 and a win this morning will put them high up the standings. A busy day ahead - watch this space for reports through the day.

10.00 All the players arrived at their boards ready for a prompt start. On day one I took a picture of George O'Toole about to make his first move as a full international player. Unfortunately his expression was a bit of a frown and that is not his normal demeanor. The editor asked me to capture a 'smiley George', now this has become a bit of a Herculean task. George is playing with my emotions. He has me dangling on a string. I tried for a decent photo this morning at the start of his encounter with Jamie Flynn, Ireland. (See photo) A split second after this picture he face broke out with the biggest, widest smile I'd ever seen - I'll get him!

12.00 George has declined the offer of a draw. Jessie was in a serious, determined frame of mind (as always), going into the game. After 1½ hours each have Knight, Bishop and pawn, Jessie stretching her legs whilst keeping an eye on the board. Murugan just out, very disappointed with his loss - quietly going through the game with Mark. The Wales team are suffering from what appears to be flu like symptoms. Teresa also not well this morning. Sarah Hegarty, Ireland U14 is getting good results and has just won to go to 4½ out of 7. [Ed, Boys U12 leader Kuzubov is live now, also Harikrishna, Negi]

12.25 3 hours play, results starting to come in. 1 hour after turning down the draw offer George is working to gain a clear advantage. He is certainly giving it his very best shot. George must be one of the youngest players in the section and is eligible for U10s next year. Another fine win for Amisha, now on 4/7, a good score for a debutante. Molly unfortunate to lose a complex game. James feeling better after securing a good win.

Anyone still playing must gave reached the 60 move mark. David is our only competitor in play, we do not have any reports as to the state of the game.

1.10 Results in - Dad was right, George a win 1.15 Ameet a draw. Craig and Simon losses 1.20 Wins for Selina and Li 1.30 Poppy a loss, Katie a draw. Teresa 0 Gawain 1 Jessie 1/2

1.44 David has done the business - brilliantly - a win - could be on electronic board in this afternoon's round 8. Pairings in about 90 mins (hopefully). Everyone to lunch then some preparation before the 4.30 start (2.30 UK time)
