World Youth Championships

Heraklion, Crete
14th to 25th November 2002

898 young chessplayers (categories under 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 for boys and girls) from 86 countries were registered, and of these 862 turned up to play, among them some of the strongest junior chess players in the world. The event is organized by the Greek Chess Federation and OAA Heraklio Chess Club with the financial support of the General Secretariat of Sports in Greece. Of the 125 names paired in the Boys' U12 category, 8 failed to appear and were defaulted in the first round.

Peter Turner reports just before the scheduled start of play: Gawain arrived on time from Italy and coach Glenn Flear completed the group just before midnight on Thursday. All the players had a session with their coaches this morning, and we enjoyed a good midday meal. We’ll do our best to be up to date with news of the England team and other bits of information of general interest and to give a flavour of the Championships... more

Eric Khoo signs off on Peter Turner's behalf after the Closing Ceremony:

The Closing ceremony for the World Youth Chess Championships in 2002 was staged at the Grand Hall where the boys played their matches.

While the delegates made their way to their seats, a number of medal winners were presented (unannounced) with their prizes due to the fact that they had to leave for home immediately. At least that was what we guessed...

Our Greek host apologised for the long delay in starting the first round of the event. Everyone in the hall clapped to show their appreciation of the overall effort made by the hosts.

Prizes were presented to the first 6 placings from each section. The prizes consist of a medal and a trophy (for the first three placings) and a trophy for 4, 5 and 6th placings. In Europe, joint positions are calculated carefully on progressives. So, only the first highest position of the 6th placing receives a trophy even though there may be a number of joint sixth players.

All 6 players (in reverse order) were named and they lined up on the stage to be presented with their trophy and medal. The U18 Girls collected their medal and trophy first followed by U18 Boys and finally down to the U10 Boys. David is placed Third (Bronze) in the U12 Boys with an impressive score of 8.5 points. This year, in the U12 Boys they have 5 FMs, 40 FIDE rated players and 9 with rating above David's 2224. The whole English team gave the loudest cheer when David went up to collect his trophy and medal. Notably, the competitiveness is so intense that even the highest rated player in the section, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave from France with 2358, did not come anywhere near to the medal positions.

Interestingly for this year, our Greek host decided to introduce music during the closing ceremony by inviting chess players with musical talents to exhibit their skills. They gave short piano "recitals" amongst them a piano Impromptu by Chopin. A Canadian girl sang "Memories" (from the show CATS).

Finally, this year's World Youth Chess Championships comes to an end. There were obviously upsets as well as triumphs. There was Bu (2601) and Wang Yue (2495) from China, Maxime (2358) from France despite being seeded 1, did not win. For the English team, the overall performance has been superb. As well as a Bronze, a joint sixth in the U12 girls (placed 9th), and an 11th in the U14 boys the majority of the players scored way over the 50% mark in their sections. Team spirit was the best overall. Everyone played their very best in a championship so tough compared with the previous year. Lastly, a loud applause to our 4 excellent coaches (Andy, Chris, Glenn and Mark) who have been the pillars of our achievement over the past 11 days.

The team will be leaving at midday on Monday flying back to UK and should be expected to touch down around 21:00hrs GMT at Heathrow airport. This is Eric Khoo signing off from Heraklion on behalf of Peter Turner.
