It is the Double Round Day today. Actually, the Players have already started and in some cases finished round 4 as I write this. But a little recap …
On Sunday night the organisers kindly arranged a “Greek Evening” at the Pallini Beach which meant that we all had a late dinner (remember this was the evening of George’s marathon so his was always going to be late anyway!) of traditional greek dishes and especially desserts, accompanied by live traditional music and dances. The upside was that the restaurant was only occupied by chess players and therefore not full to overflowing; the food was excellent; the wine flowed and fun was had by all.

But there’s no time for more, here’s the Chess bit:
As you know, it is a very tough draw. So Joseph breaks nearly all records by winning in 7 minutes and 8 moves, but in having only one queen does not get near Callum’s achievement. Patrick also wins so he is off the mark – well done! Jessica gets a draw against her WFM opponent! There is no flurry of results, players come out well spaced over the 4 hours that England players are still at their boards. Unfortunately both our 100%ers (Samuel and Lateefah) lose, but overall results are better than might have been feared, with a total of 5½ out of 12:

Sorry, no time to await the draw for Round 5, suffice to say it is unlikely to precede the start of the round by more than a few minutes!

And now, re-newing our brand-introducing feature:
******** Great Chess Moments from History ********
And finally, Kids Korner!
"There are two types of sacrifices: correct ones and mine." (Tal)
Facts For the Memory
Nimzovich (1886-1935)
Nimzovich would stand on his head during chess events and did exercises in the tournament room. He once broke a leg while playing chess. He twisted his leg around the leg of his chair and then, having made his move, leaped up, only to crash to the floor in pain with a broken leg. In 1927, Nimzovich complained to tournament director Maroczy that Vidmar (Nimzovich’s best friend) had just pulled out some cigars and put them on the chess table. Maroczy asked why Nimzovich was so upset, since Vidmar had not started smoking anything. Nimzovich replied, “Yes, but the threat is more important than the execution.”
