The
“team room” was filled with English players battling with homework,
beavering away at chess prep and indulging in a variety of recreational activities
this morning. The pace is picking up at the championships now and there seems
to be less time for everything than before. The mums still find time to fit
in those little essentials like a morning cappuccino on the beach each morning!
Lunch hit a new time high with a bright orange ice-cream tasting of an unusual
combination of bubblegum and fairy liquid; needless to say no-one actually finished
a whole cone.
On to the round then. Callum came out at 5.22 pm precisely with the delighted comment of “I beat him in my room before I even started!” Callum had spent vital minutes just before the game preparing a line and was surprised but pleased to find that the game followed the line almost to the end.
After such a positive start, Peter (U12) then Roy and Katie all reported a
loss. Subin raised the mood with yet another solid draw shortly after. Subin
is fast becoming “king of the draws” in this competition.
A mixed bag of results came in next at 7pm, Craig with a loss and Amisha with
a win. Amisha played a line she was very comfortable with and capitalised on
her opponents blunder.
Half an hour later, Peter drew with a higher rated Spanish FM (2370), this was quite an achievement as shortly before he had been in time trouble with 20 moves to be completed in about 6 minutes.
8pm came and went with the majority of people making their way to the restaurant.
At this point, reports were filtering through to the rest of the team that Anjali
was locked in a fierce battle with a Russian in which she (Anjali) had a small
advantage. At 8.30 pm, she emerged with a draw.
The team score for the day: 3½\9.
