Lancashire are the 2007 ECF Open County Champions, beating Surrey 10-6 in a
hard fought contest at finals day in Leicestershire.
The match began disastrously for the southern county who found a handful of
their players trapped in horrendous traffic congestion as the clocks were about
to start. Some got through, but In the end Surrey had to default on two boards.
They then put up a tremendous battle. Lancashire captain Mike Conroy admitting
that even when the quick play finishes started he had little idea of the outcome.
"It was close and it was close all the way. We never really had a big enough
advantage to give us complete confidence."
Lancashire's top boards of Littlewood, Hague and Lund all delivered the goods,
but it was the unexpected turnaround from an unfavourable position by P Almond
on Board 12 that secured Lancashire the victory.
It is almost 40 years since Lancashire last took the Open Championship and their
path to the final has been particularly tough, taking in Essex and Kent.
The ECF extends it congratulations to Lancashire and its commiserations to Surrey.
Full team lists and scores and details of the other finals day winners will
be placed on the ECF website shortly, and a full report will appear in the next
issue of ChessMoves.
