SMITH AND WILLIAMSON CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2003

How to Qualify

1. British Champion in any of the past five years

2. A score of 7/11 or better in the 2002 Championship

3. The reigning British Under 21 Champion

4. Finishing in the top three, or highest placed Under 21, in the 2002 Major Open

5. The Champion, or nominee, of each Commonwealth country of playing strength 2200 or higher.

6. The Champion, or nominee, of each of the English Chess Unions.

7. The two highest placed eligible competitors in regional Open Swisses organised by the English Chess Unions.

8. An active rating of 220 (2360) or higher in a current British Isles national grading list. (not Rapidplay) or the F.I.D.E. list of July 2002, October 2002, January 2003, April 2003 or July 2003.

9. For players:

Under 21 Active rating of 215 (2320) or higher
Under 18 Active rating of 210 (2280) or higher
Under 16 Active rating of 205 (2240) or higher
Under 14 Active rating of 200 (2200) or higher
Under 12 Active rating of 190 (2120) or higher

10. The highest placed eligible player, not already qualified, from any OPEN FIDE rated event that fulfil all the following conditions:-

11. Nominees of the Scottish Chess Association, Welsh Chess Union, Ulster Chess Union, Irish Chess Union, Guernsey Chess Federation and Jersey Chess Federation.

12. Any female player with an active rating of at least 2120 (190 BCF) in a current British Grading List (not Rapidplay) or the FIDE List of July 2002, October 2002, January 2003, April 2003 or July 2003.

13. The six highest congress contributors to B.C.F. Game Fee in 2003

14. A Nominee from the town congress (Edinburgh 2003).

15. The top three players not already qualified in the 2002 Terence Chapman Group Grand Prix.

16. A player nominated by the host county/league provided that a support Committee has been set up to assist the Federation.

17. A Junior nominee, not already qualified, from the 2002 Smith and Williamson Young Masters, the Ampleforth Junior International and the 2003 Junior Squad Championships

These are the sole methods of qualification to the Championships for 2003. The Federation maintains a complete list of qualified players throughout the year which can be checked on receipt of a SAE envelope addressed to the BCF Office. The qualification rules are always under review and any queries about them should be addressed to the B.C.F Director of Congress Chess.
