Play-off - Should there be a tie for the title after 11 rounds a play-off will take place on Saturday 2nd August. 10% of the prize fund due for 1st and any subsequent prizes involved in the tie will be held back and distributed following the play-off. The type and length of play-off plus the distribution of prizes will be determined by the number of players involved; full details will be given in the event programme. Entry to the Championship is deemed as acceptance of these conditions. |

NB The new 2003 BCF Grading List (if available) will be used
to allocate players to the Weekenders. Players may play in a higher section
than their grade if they so wish. Players may request a ½ point bye in
any round when entering providing this is done in writing beforehand. This event
will also qualify for the Chessbase Scottish Grand Prix.
Rates of Play: - Normal Play: The rate of play in all
normal play events is 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by 20 moves in one hour
followed by all moves in 30 minutes.
Quickplay Finish Events:- The rate of play in all quickplay finish events
(Under 16 to Under 10, Weekenders, Two rounds a day) is 40 moves in 100 minutes
followed by all moves in 20 minutes.
Rapidplay Events:- Under 8 all moves in 30 minutes; Under 9 all moves
in one hour; Sunday Rapidplays - Either all moves in 30 minutes or Fischer
mode as announced.
Hours of Play: - The standard hours of play in tournaments are shown: -
(am) 9.30 a.m. - 1.30 p.m. (pm) 2.15 p.m. – 9.15 p.m.
Certain tournaments (5 day 2 rounds, Afternoon Rounds Junior Events) will have a later start time (normally 2.45 p.m.) in the afternoon. Full details will be given in the programme. DGT clocks will be used in the British Championship and may be used in the Rapidplays.
Adjournments: - Games in morning events with Normal Play as defined above, will not this year be adjourned except at the request of both players, in which case the adjournment will be after 4 hours play with resumption in the afternoon.
Programme: - this will be sent free to competitors (with the exception of players in the weekend event only) about one week before the start of the Championships.
Bulletins: - All players in the British Championship, Major
Open and Junior Championships (Under 10 - Under 16) will receive a bulletin
as part of their entry fee. If this is not possible a refund will be made equating
to part of the entry fee.
Charts: - Players will also receive a tournament chart of their
event either as part of their bulletin or posted to them after the Championships.
This does not apply to Weekender events.
Discounts: -
a) Clients or employees of the Smith & Williamson Group may enter free any section for which they are eligible.
b) BCF Full Direct Members/Chess Scotland Full Members can claim a discount of £2 per event entered
NB. This discount not available for Standard or Junior Direct Members
c) Players can claim a discount of £2 per event if they enter more than one event; this discount is for any second or subsequent events.
d) Families can claim one £3 discount for a second family member, £4 for a third and so on. This applies to juniors only.
These discounts apply only to entrants who enter before the closing date.
Late Entry Surcharges: - To organise these Championships to
the high standards expected it is important that entries are received early.
Therefore the following surcharges apply: -
Entries received postmarked after 23rd June - £25 (2 week events);
£10 (1 week events)
Entries received postmarked after 13th July or received at the event;
a further £10.
The Federation reserves the right to refuse any entry made at the event.
Weekender events (including the Under 8 & Under 9 Championships)
will incur no penalty until postmarked after 13th July when following will apply-
£5 Swiss events; £2 Rapidplays; entries on the day £10 Swiss;
£5 Rapidplays
Multiple Entries& Byes: - Players cannot take part in two tournaments on the same day if the sessions potentially overlap. The following exceptions apply:-
Players may take a ½pt bye in a Weekender if they are playing in an am event
Players may take a ½pt bye in Major Open if they have an extra junior pm round
Players may take a ½ pt bye in Rd 7 of the Under 11 (if not in contention for a prize) in order to play in the Under 8 Championship.
Players may request a ½pt bye in any non-Championship event in advance subject to the above and should clearly mark the entry form with this request.
Commentary: - Daily commentary will take place on British Championship games
Coaching: - Coaching sessions in the morning and evenings
may be arranged throughout the congress. Further details will be given in the
programme.
Bursaries: - Reductions in entry fees may be available for junior entrants.
Any entrant receiving a bursary cannot qualify for an event discount. Please

1) No entries can be accepted except on an official entry form. Additional
forms can be obtained by contacting the B.C.F.Office with a stamped addressed
envelope. Entries will only be acknowledged if a stamped address envelope
is enclosed.
2) Competitors are expected to maintain acceptable standards of dress &
behaviour.
3) Competitors must attend the appropriate prizegiving for their event as announced
in the programme. The main prizegiving will be held on Saturday 2nd August at
9.30 a.m. Failure to attend without the prior permission of the Congress Director
and/or a Principal Arbiter will result in the forfeiting of the prize concerned.
4) Every effort is made to place entrants in the tournament of their choice
but the right is reserved to transfer an entry to another appropriate section.
The right is reserved to refuse any entry without assigning a reason. The Federation
may deduct an administration fee from any refund to players withdrawing without
good cause.
5) Ungraded players must give full details of their playing strength plus details
of any grades previously held.
6) A player withdrawing from any event without good cause will be liable to
pay a full entry fee at any future event organised by the Federation and/or
a bond returnable on satisfactory conduct during such events.
7) Only food/drink bought at the School Refectory can be consumed within the
Refectory and the playing areas.
Entry to the Championships is deemed to be acceptance of these conditions.

The terrace areas around the old building is used as a dropping-off point. Access to the playing halls is by flights of stairs. The frontispiece to this year’s programme is from a painting by a former student, Porteous Wood. The school has a unique setting beneath the country’s most famous landmark – Edinburgh Castle. From the Castle you can take a leisurely stroll down the Royal Mile enjoying its many unique shops, museums and historic buildings on your way to Holyrood Palace, opposite Scotland’s new Parliament.
