Chess Battles at Hastings

A very special Match of the Generations took place at Hastings Chess Club on Saturday 11th September 2004 between a combined Team of Hastings under 20s and Sussex Juniors against a team from the club in a 5 minutes Blitz Chess.

Local MP Michael Foster kindly agreed to participate and although he had not played chess for some 30 years, he gave a performance he should be proud of, playing many of the juniors. Accompanying Michael was his 6 year old grandson Billy Foster who became a valued member of the junior team.

The three English Junior Internationals were outstanding Thomas Rendle (Hastings) is on his way to an International Masters Title, Joe Richardson (Hastings), Adam Prescott (Crowborough), the remaining junior team were Nimai MacCarthy (Hastings), Polly Lambert (East Grinstead), was the only girl at the event, Joe and Nick Fraser (Crowborough), George Slimbesi (Crowborough), Carl Board (Crowborough), Alistair Jones (East Grinstead) and George Ward (Hastings).

The event was a friendly, hectic (65 games played) and highly successful event enjoyed by participants and spectators alike.

A special vote of thanks is due to Marc Bryant and his team of players for their help and use of their premises at Hastings and St Leonards Chess Club, also to Francis Rayner Coach of Hastings Juniors and Jonathan Tuck Coach of Sussex Juniors.
