Free Chess Sets for Schools in England
Just once in a lifetime, if you are very fortunate, something happens
which is bigger than anything you ever imagined. To say that I am
delighted to be actively involved with a chess opportunity which
has arisen over the past 7 months or so would be an understatement

At a meeting yesterday, Holloid confirmed
that they remain committed to the Chess For Schools project. Unfortunately,
Holloid have had a problem with one of their moulds and this has delayed
production. A statement on the production of sets will be issued once
this has been resolved. The ECF remains in close contact with Holloid.
The ECF plans to follow-up this by providing a support package to
school chess clubs. In addition, the ECF plans to establish a national
network of chess academies that will provide local support to the
schools. Up-front costs for this will be funded by a loan from the
John Robinson Trust. Further details of the progress on the Chess
for Schools project will be published on the ECF website in due course.
Any schools that have not yet registered for the scheme should contact
the ECF Office at

David Howell is Equal 3rd in World Junior
Championship
We congratulate David Howell on his equal 3rd place in The
World Junior Championship.
This event was extremely strong with many Grandmasters taking part. David
had two games of over 100 moves, winning one of them and losing the other.
This must have tired him at the end of the 13-round tournament. His last
round loss placed him in 3rd equal position. The quality of his play and
the manner in which he came back after defeats to resume a run of wins
was an example to all chess-players. England is proud to have David as
a player.
